  • Cervidna favna iz paleolitskih najdišč Slovenije = Cervidae fauna from Palaeolithic sites of Slovenia
Fuart Gatnik, Mojca ; Pohar, Vida ; Bulog, Boris
There are many deer fossils, as prey of human hunters, among the Pleistocene fauna collected from the twelve Paleolithic sites in Slovenia. Described fossils have confirmed the presence of six deer ... species through the Upper Pleistoceneč the red deer (Cervus elaphus), roe deer (Capreolus cupreolus), rein deer (Rangifer tarandus), fallow deer (Dama dama), elk (Alces alces) and giant deer (Megaceros (Megaloceros) giganteus). The presence and the proportions of different species vary in dependence of climate changes in the younger Pleistocene. Findings show that the elk and the red deer were very common from the risswürm interglacial till the end of the late glacial. The rein deer was a dominant cervidae species in very cold conditions (last glacial peak in the late würm). The fallow, roe and giant deer are represented by only a few findings in the milder younger Pleistocene interstadials.
