  • Estimation of ground surface roughness from acoustic emission signals

    ǂAn ǂexperimental system comprised of an external grinding machine, a data acquisition unit and an artificial neural network is used for on-line estimation of a ground surface properties from ... acoustic emission signal. Non-parametric regression between surface correlation and acoustic spectrum is first modeled by a self-organized learning from empirical data. After learning the regression is used for on-line estimation of surface correlation function from the acoustic spectrum. Experiments were done on grinding of hardened steel workpieces by a corundum wheel. After the dressing of the wheel the estimation error first decreases and remains rather constant during the wheel lifetime. When the wheel becomes worn out the error rises again.
