  • Predpisovanje antibiotikov v zobozdravstvu v Sloveniji = Antibiotic prescribing practices among Slovene dentists
    Cvetko, Erika ...
Background: Inappropriate consumption of antibiotics is the main cause of increasing bacterial resistance, which has become an important health problem in Europe and all over the world. The aim of ... this article is to assess the utilization of antibiotics by Slovene dentists. Methods: ln a retrospective study, we collected and analysed data on antibiotic prescriptions issued by our dentists in the year 2009. The consumption of antibiotics was expressed bythe number of defined daily doses (DOOs) per 1000 inhabitants per day, number of prescriptions, and total cost of prescribed antibiotics. The structure of prescribed antibiotics was also analyzed. Results: ln 2009, our dentists prescribed 0.78 000 of antibiotics per inhabitants per day and issued28.8 prescriptions per 1000 inhabitants. This accounted for 5.4% of all antibiotics prescribed in ambulatory care in that year. The total cost of antibiotics prescribed by dentists was 605,578 EUR, or 4.9% of the cost of allantibiotics prescribed in ambulatory care. The most frequently prescribed antibiotics were amoxicillin-clavulanic acid (78%), followed by macrolide (8%)and pyranoside antibiotics (3%). Conclusions: ln order to halt the emergence of antibiotic-resistant microbial strains, we must strive to increase the use of narrow-spectrum antibiotics and decrease the use of amoxicillin-clavulanic acid and macrolides. Our present data provide a basis for following the trends of antibiotic use by our dentists, comparing the consumption with that in other countries, studying bacterial resistance, and implementing measures to improve the current prescribing practices.
