  • Growing period characteristics and their impact in soil, croping pattern and natural vegetation in Slovenia
Verheye, Willy ; Prus, Tomaž ; Lobnik, Franc, 1942-
The FAO concept on growing period has been adapted to Slovenian conditions. On the basis of monthly data of rainfall, calculated potential evapotranspiration and temperature for 21 representative ... stations, 6 major growing period types have been identified in the country: alpine, alpine-dinaric and subalpine types where, as a result of the low winter temperatures, the lenght of the growing period is limited to respectively less than 120, 120-180 and 180-240 days, a subpanonian type with 230-260 days, and a submediterranean, resp. mediterranean type with growing periods extending over 240-300 and more than 300 days; the latter group is characterized by mild winters and a slight moisture deficit in summer. Each of those ecotypes has a specific natural vegetation, soil type and cropping pattern.
