--Transient protection is playing an important role in normal operation of modern electronic devices. The ZnO varistor is one of the basic components of transient protection. The paper describes ...numerical modelling of metal oxide varistors with diferent simulations models. Some models are frequency independent while some models take into account the frequency of the transient. Two existing models of ZnO varistors and surge arresters for fast transient impulses are evaluated by comparing the model predictions with the experimental results. Since some differences were observed between the measurement and simulation results, an improved varistor model is proposed. The impulse generators influence the time domain waveshapes of the current through and the voltage over the varistor and therefore the models of the impulse generator used in experiments were also made. Some measurements were done with very fast transient impulses in order to determine the varistor response and make a simulation model.
