  • HAZ microstructure sensitivity to fatigue crack initiation under the influence of small artificial surface flaws
    Gliha, Vladimir
The results of bending fatigue strength on grooved specimens with synthetic HAZ microstructure which is found adjacent to the fusion line are analyzed. Specimens were grooved causing similar level of ... stress concentration as that existing at the weld toe. The grooves were smooth and flawed at the bottom where the stress is the highest. Artificil flaws were single and series of Vickers indentations. Fatigue strength is found to be a linear function of HAZ strength and a hyperbolic function of flaw size. In the case of insignificant flaw size and/or softer HAZ microsructure nominal bending fatigue of the weld joints could be increased by the local plastic deformation of material at the weld toe.
