    Stare, Metka, 1956-
The basic objective of the paper is to contribute to better understanding of service innovation, particularly in transition economies, where technologist perception still dominates and influences the ... design of innovation policy. We review the distinguishing features of service innovation to highlight its complexity and multi-dimensionality. Knowledge intensive services are at the centre of our analysis, due to the fact they are the most innovation intensive services and also facilitate innovation processes throughout the economy. Case study methodology and evidence based approach is used to identify the characteristics of innovation patterns in knowledge intensive services. The results show large diversity of innovation types in knowledge intensive services and confirm that innovation occurs along the whole value creating chain. Firms engage in different types of innovation that are complementary, indicating the need for an integrated approach to formulating services inclusive innovation policies. In conclusion we indicate steps and actions that could inform the process of policy shaping in regard of service innovation in transition economies.
