  • A new rolling contact fatigue testing device
    Kalin, Mitjan ; Vižintin, Jože
Rolling contact fatigue (RCF) testers could be roughly classified into full-scale and bench or model testers. Due to the rotational movement, complex contact geometry, and high speeds which demand ... high standards of tolerance, both types of testers are expensive. In this paper a new RCF device named "CTD-ROL" is presented in which the loading part moves linearly reprocatingly and rolls the ball over the flat specimen. The simple testing principle and simple specimen geometry make RCF testing with our device considerably less expensive than with comparative testers. Furthermore, a special design and testing procedure allows intermediate stops of rolling, which is especially beneficial for reducing testing time when the progress of surface fatigue or wear is of interest.
