  • Europe-wide programmes for information retrieval and information seeking
    Bawden, David ; Vilar, Polona
This presentation reports an approach towards a European curriculum for information seeking and information retrieval (IS&R), and includes aspects of human information behaviour. It is part of a ... larger EU-supported project, aimed at joint curriculum development for library and information science (US)in Europe. IS&R is an important core of the US discipline - arguably the central core. It should be included in any US course, at any level. No attempt is made to specify a single curriculum for such a broad subject area. Rather, an analysis of the area is made, in terms of its three aspects (human information behaviour, information seeking and information retrieval) and three perspectives or paradigms, by which it may be presented (human- or user-centred, culture-centred and system-centred). This leads to a set of 28 topics, covering the whole theme, from which courses at a variety of levels (Bachelor, Master, or professional development), depth, and subject focus may be constructed. The analysis also covers issues such as relations between the curriculum, research and practice; ethical issues; the place of information technology (IT); IS&R in various information spaces, such as libraries, archives and museums; the European dimension; and multicultural aspects.
