Background. Modern treatment methods with concommitant developmnent of information and communications technology (ICT) demand new organisational approaches in the field of family medicine. The ... definition of family medicine with its specificity in the contents and in the way of work is the point of first contact o fan indivudual wth the health system. A long distance communcication cannot replace an expert to patient consultation, however, numerous ICT services can be more efficient, more accessable, user friendly and safe. In Slovenia, several efforts in this direction have already been made in last decade (i.e.national strategy eHealth). Layout and the aim of the project. Among the 27 EU members (EU27) and four developing states (Norway, Croatia, Isladn and Turkey), Slovenia was invited in 2012 into the reasearch project SMART. The aim of the project was to measure the access and use of ICT among family practitioners on the primary level of healthcare. Methodology. A questionnaire consisting of items such as internet access in practice computer use during consultation, eletronic patient medical data sharing among different health professionals, communicating with patients, electronic health records was prepared. In Slovenia, a random sample consisting of 167 family practitioners (16,5%of all Slovene FP population)formed. Safety and anonimity of data assured, electronic questionnaire was made available on a designated website from Dec.20, 2012 to Feb 28, 2013. Results. The following 4 areas of ICT in family practice were composited in a general index of e-health: electronic health record, health information exchange, telehealth and personal health record. All participating countires were compared and aligned according to this index. In most of the parameters Slovenia was found to be below the average of the EU 27, as well as below the average of the transitional countries. In some areas, Slovenia was found to be above average of other participating countries. These areas are requests score, professional to professional score, professional to patient score and administrative data score. Compared to a previous survey, computer use during consultation among Slovenian FP has increased significantly (from 18% in 2007 to 88% in 2013).
