  • Strategies for the tanslation of new genres between Slovene and English - an analysis
    Limon, David
Slovenia has to rely on translation into English in its dealings with a range of international bodies. Many of the genres being translated are new to the Slovene context: an example is the annual ... progress report submitted to the European Commission in Brussels. We shall look at how a contrastive functionaland genre analysis of political progress reports can help develop strategies for producing more effective translations. An analytical model is presented that starts with the translation situation and the context of culture, before identifying the communicative purpose of the translated text and the relevant genre conventions. The subsequent analysis relates to the text profile, coherence, cohesion, information structure and, finnaly, selected register and lexico-grammatical features. In this paper we discuss in detail only the first step, including the background to the report, who is involved in the translation process, the translator training and support provided, and offer a few examples of the translation strategies employed. Thegeneral findings of the analysis are also given in brief, and some implications with regard to translator training and future research noted.
