  • Health claims on foods : promoting healthy food choices or high salt intake?
    Cappuccio, Francesco ; Pravst, Igor
A direct relationship between high sodium intake and raised blood pressure led several countries and health organizations to development of recommendations for the reduction of salt (sodium chloride) ... intake in populations. Because consumers are very sensitive to health-related communications the regulation of the use of health claims on foods can be usedas a helpful approach to achieve a reduction in population salt intake. Nutrient profiles should have been established in the European Union to exclude the use of health claims on foods with an overall poor nutritional status, but unfortunately this part of the legislation has not yet been implemented. Additionally, health claim for chloride is currently in the authorisation process. Such claims might not only encourage consumers to increase their consumption of salt-rich foods and mislead them about making healthy food choices, but also encourage the producers of foods and food supplements to increase sodium chloride contents to a level that enables such claims to be made. To prevent this it is of critical importance to set nutrient profiles and limit the use of health claims on foods which are a source of sodium.
