  • Assessment of overhead transmission line lightning performance with improved EGM [Elektronski vir]
    Bečan, Miha, 1982- ...
In the past the overhead transmission lines (OTL) in Slovenia were designed and built disregarding the reliably assessed expected lightning performance. Therefore, it was impossible to improve the ... lightning performance in the design phase. The importance of OTL performance has increased since the transmission capacity became scarce. For a statistical evaluation of the existing and new OTLs lightning performance the SigmaSLP computer programme with lightning data obtained by SCALAR, the Slovenian Centre for the Automatic Lightning Localisation, was introduced. The results obtained by the electro geometric modelling (EGM) of a typical Slovenian 2 x 110 kV OTL with only one ground wire showed high dependence on the nearby objects heights. The analysis showed that without taking the nearby object into account the direct lightning stroke protection is not efficient. The major parts of lightning strokes directly touch the phase wire. Direct lightning strokes into the phase wire almost always cause a flashover, although such lightning strikes have lower crest currents. Due to computer software EGM limitations the simulations of real surface configurations were done. Real right of the way surface level, vegetation height and overhead transmission line geometry were obtained with aerial laser survey. Slovenian TSO engaged a highly specialised company Flycom in order provide for a suitable OTL aerial laser survey. Based on these data the simulation of lightning impact using Monte Carlo method was implemented.
