  • Wear behavior of glass-infiltrated alumina dental ceramic
Kalin, Mitjan ; Ives, Lewis K. ; Jahanmir, Said
Glass-infiltrated alumina is a common dental material used as the core in dental restorations. If the veneer cover is damaged and/or removed through use, direct contact can occur between the core ... material and opposing human enamel. To simulate the wear behaviour of glass infiltrated alumina against enamel, hydroxyapatite with properties that are close to the human enamel was selected as the counter face pin material. The wear tests were conducted using a pin on disk tribometer with distilled water lubrications. The wear mechanisms of the alumina and hydroxyapatite were evaluated as a function of load and surface roughness. While the wear rate of alumina was quite small, the hydroxyapatite counter face was subjected to considerable wear, the extent of which was dependent on the load and roughness of the alumina surface. These results are compared with those obtained on the other dental ceramics.
