(Post)communist censorship in translation - religion as a tabooKocijančič-Pokorn, NikeAndré Lefevere has revealed the censorship of more explicit sexual connotationin translations of classical authors, hypothesizing that the dominant morality of many Western target cultures could not ... tolerate a more liberal treatment of sexuality and felt threatened by it. It is argued here that in Socialist countries, in particular in Slovenia, a similar threat was seen in religion. To support this claim some translations of children-s literature into Slovene were examined more closely. Analysis of six children'sclassics translated from English, Swedish and German into Slovene showed that censorship was focused primarily on Christian elements. Religious elements were either omitted or tempered in order to make the works more acceptable to Socialist ideology. Since the attenuated version of censorship directed against Christianity in children's literature is still present in post-Socialist translations, it is argued that the reasons for this translation practice are no longer ideological but economic.Source: Tradition versus modernity : from the classic period of the Prague school to translation studies at the beginning of the 21st century (Str. 175-185)Type of material - article, component part ; adult, seriousPublish date - 2008Language - englishCOBISS.SI-ID - 38605666
