  • Phenological development and lignification in italian ryegrass cultivars
    Čop, Jure, 1956-
Phenological index that account for variation in chemical composition of herbage would be valuable to farmers and researches. Hence, the objective of this study was to relate morphological stages ... (MS) of 7 italian ryegrass ( Lolium multiflorum Lam.) cultivars to their lignin content in herbage. The following cultivars were included: K-13 (YU), Tetraflorum (D), Pollanum (D), Ninak (NL), Urbana (NL), Dilana (D), Draga (SLO) in a field trial of split-plot design. The cultivars were sown on 20 sept. 1989 and harvested at four 2-wk intervals during the spring of next year. Laboratory evaluations included the use of a modified Simon and Park's scale, Acid-detergent fibre and Acid-detergent lignin. Dry matter digestibility (DMD) was calculated from the lignin content in herbage using Joshi's equation (1972). After ear emergence (MS=40), a close correlation between lignin content and morphological development stage was noted. Mean lignin contents for all cultivars were 1.15% at MS=23.0, 1.32% at MS= 40.2, 3.5% at MS=54.4 and 4.62% in DM at MS=70.3. Calculated DMD was: 81%, 80%, 71% and 66% resp.. Diferences among cultivars were relatively small and did not appear to show any trends or correlation.
