  • Sol-gel synthesis and characterization of luminescent silica and tin oxide doped with europium or terbium
    Županc Mežnar, Lea ...
Luminescent materials emit visible light during the excitation with UV light (in fluorescent lamps) or with high-energy electrons in cathode-ray tubes. Sol-gel process is a promising method because ... it enables the preparation of homogeneous and pure materials. From the sol state varoius special shapes can be obtained like monoliths, films, fibers and monosized powders. Red and green luminescent materials (SnOsub]2:Eu, SnO[2]:Tb, SiO[2}:Eu and SiO[sub]2:Tb) were prepared by sol-gel technique. Both inorganic and alkoxide methods were used. Silica and thin oxide were used as chemically stable compounds that can stand the prolonged Coulomb loading in display devices. The emission of the Eu[sup]3+ and Tb[sup]3+ ions consists of characteristic lines in red and green spectral area, recpectively. Absorption spectra of transparent silica monoliths were used to study the excitation transitions of two activators. Powders and thin films were also prepared. The products were than characterized by thermal analysis, scanning electron microscopy, EXAFS analysis, UV-visible absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy and cathodoluminescent measurements.
