New experimental technique for measuring strain and residual stresses at laser remelting processGrum, Janez, 1946- ; Šturm, Roman, 1965-Laser hardening by remelting thin surface layers is a very prospective hardening method for ferrous and non-ferrous alloys, which do not show a homogeneous microstructural state after having been ... heat-treated in a classical way. Consequently, the alloys concerned do not achieve the required hardness of the surface layer and do not provide the required wear resistance either. In laser remelting of a workpiece such remelting conditions should be ensured that a uniform thickness of the modified layer can be obtained in spite of several laser-beam passages across the workpiece surface. Because of a multiple laser-beam passage across the workpiece surface, the state of stress in the workpiece is changing and, consequently, an undesired strain may occur. Such a strain may result in greater consumption of the material, additional machining, for instance grinding, which may result, in turn, in a higher cost price of the article or increased number of machine parts rejected. The paper deals with strain changes of thin flat specimens of nodular cast 500-7 in the laser remelting process. In the process of gradual remelting of the surface layer, that is during its heating and cooling, volume changes of the specimen occur due to thermal and microstructural changes. For a better knowledge of volume changes in the thin surface layer of the sample, the latter were monitored by strain measurement at the lower side of the specimen during the remelting process and by residual-stress measurement in the thin surface layer after the remelting process. The results obtained confirmed that on the basis of knowing the strains occurring during the remelting process and of the residual stresses, the process can be successfully optimised.Source: Congress proceedings (Vol. 3, str. 129-135)Type of material - conference contributionPublish date - 2000Language - englishCOBISS.SI-ID - 4024347
