  • A study of the influence on hiding power of the composition of a paint and its film thickness
    Tušar, Marjan ...
The purpose of this study was to find out the major influences of the contents, i.e. binder, extender, white pigment, additive, and the thickness on the hiding power of coatings. Experiments needed ... for this study were systematically selected using a constrained mixture design.Different formulations of coatings were prepared according to the experimental design and the hiding power was then measured as the response. Polynomial functions and neural networks were used for determination of the major influential factors. The results from both models were compared with the values of measured hiding power as well as the values calculated by Kubelka-Munk theory.Comparsion of three models, namely polynomial, neural network and Kubelka - Munk theory, with the values obtained by measuring the hiding power, confirmed that the neural network model was the most exact in determinining the hiding power of coatings. Because the results from the polynomial model were also close to the neural network model, some influences of the composition and the thickness were also determined on the basis of the polynomial model. The main conclusions is that the neural network model is a useful tool for predicting the hiding power of coatings. Also the hiding power of selected coating depends on all its components (pigment, extender, additives, binder) and on the thickness.
