  • Measuring separation and individuation : the pictorial test of separation and individuation
    Žvelc, Maša
In this paper The pictorial test of separation and individuation (Žvelc & Žvelc , 2000) will be presented and its possible use in counseling and psychotherapy. It is a new instrument for measuring ... separation-individuation process and attachment in adolescence and adulthood. It consists of various pictures, which represent relationships with significant others. The test is divided into three subtests: Relationship with Mother, Relationship with Father and Attachment. The psychometric properties of the pictorial test of separation and individuation were studied on a sample of 1136 subjects aged from 11 to 68 years. The test has good developmental sensitivity and external correlates of the instrument are congruent with theoretical background (correlations with adult attachment styles, object relations, self-concept, parental representations, personality disorders and clinical diagnosis). The results of the research indicate that PTSI is consistent with theoretical background, has good sensitivity and is economical. It enables quick but complex insight into individual's relationships with the family members and the person outside of the family. The instrument can be used not only for research purposes and clinical diagnostics but also as a valuable tool for counseling and therapy.
