The tribological properties of Al2O3 based composite coatings deposited by plasma spraying [Elektronski vir]Mathew, Jacob Shiby ...The aim was to determine the tribological properties of Al2O3, Al2O3-graphite and Al2O3-ZrO2 coatings. Using atmospheric plasma spraying, ceramic coatings were deposited on stainless steel ... substrates. For the deposition process, Al2O3, Al2O3-10 wt.% graphite and Al2O3-10 wt.% ZrO2 powders were employed. The flow rates of air and hydrogen were 4.7 g/s and 0.1 g/s, respectively. The employed torch power was ~40 kW. The surface morphology was examined using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) Hitachi S-3400N. The elemental composition of the coatings was determined by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) Bruker Quad 5040 spectrometer. The surface roughness was measured using a Mitutoyo Surftest-SJ-210-Ver2.00 profilometer. Structural characterization of the coatings was carried out using X-ray diffractometry. The tribological properties of the samples were measured using a CETR-UMT-2 ball-on-disc tribometer. The surface roughness (Ra) of the Al2O3 coatings was 4.04 [micro]m and with the addition of graphite, it was 3.41 [micro]m. For Al2O3-ZrO2 coatings, the surface roughness was 3.65 [micro]m. It could be seen from the SEM images that with increase in torch power, the surface disorder had increased and with addition of graphite, sphere-like globules were formed. The XRD measurements indicated that the dominant phases in the Al2O3 and Al2O3-graphite coatings were [alfa]-Al2O3 and [beta]-Al2O3. And with Al2O3-ZrO2 it was tetragonal-ZrO2. Friction coefficient of the Al2O3 coatings at 1 N load was ~0.72, with graphite it was ~0.59, and with ZrO2 it was ~0.75.
