  • Talented Slovene swimmers migrating to USA : a preliminary study of psycho-socio-cultural aspects of sports migration
Cecić Erpič, Saša ; Doupona, Mojca ; Usenik, Janja
In Slovenia lately we have been noticing the trend that young talented swimmers opt for continuing sport careers in the USA. Several swimmers (Olympic level athletes as well as athletes on a ... pre-elite level) decided to continue higher education in USA, combining studies with swimming for university teams. On a general level, the reason for their migration is twofold: to enhance sporting results by being in a highly competitive environment with good training conditions as well as to gain an internationally acclaimed education. When athlete migrates to another environment, he/she has to adapt on a psychological, psychosocial as well as on a cultural level. The aim of this study is to present preliminary results of athletes' adaptations on these levels. Using both inductive and deductive content analysis, 10 Slovene swimmers (six male, four female) that transferred to USA were interviewed. A semi-structured in-depth interview schedule was designed for the purposes of this study to elicit psychological, psychosocial, and cultural aspects of the athletic migration (Cecić Erpič, Doupona Topič, & Tekavc, 2012). Results of the content analysis will be presented and discussed by using framework based on the developmental model of sports career (Wylleman & Lavallee, 2004).
