    Hočevar-Boltežar, Irena ...
One hundred and ten patients with head and neck cancer who were surgically treated at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology and Cervicofacial Surgery in Ljubljana in the years 1990-1992 were included ... into the total rehabilitation program. Agroup of professionals tried to identify the unfavourable factors that could hinder the rehabilitation and reintegration of the patients in his home environment after treatment. The rehabilitation was planned with regard to the findings. In more than one half of the patients, at least one unfavourable factor was found (sequellae of past illnesses, impaired hearing or sight, impaired pulmonary function, defective teeth, vocal or speech disorders). The success of the rehabilitation was evaluated 9 or 12 months after treatment. The speech was significantly impaired in 40,9 % of patients. 33,6 % of patients had difficulty chewing. 20 % of patients had trouble swallowing. A any rate, more than two thirds of all patients were satisfied with their reintegration in their home environment. In conclusion, only individually planned rehabilitation can enable a suitable quality of life for a patient after the treatment of head and neck cancer.
