Zum Gebrauch von Gefühls-Lexemen in Kleists Marquise von O---

This article presents analyses of lexemes in the German language representing Gefühl (feeling) in Heinrich von Kleistʼs novella Marquise von O... (The Marquise of O). These are Gefühl, fühlen, ...Empfindung, empfinden, empfindlich and Affekt, all of which is usually seen as synonyms of the modern lexeme Emotion. To begin with, it is argued that this is often not true and the difference between them is exemplified in this novella by Kleist. This study will show that these lexemes are mostly used to describe the cognitive processes of the characters. Emotional states are rarely described using these lexemes, and if so, then always as reactions to the actions described in Kleistʼs text.
