  • Wo ist Heimat? : das Gefühl des Fremdsein und Sehnsucht nach der Heimat in Anna Mitgutschs Roman Haus der Kindheit
    Jeleč, Marijana
Anna Mitgutschʼs novel Haus der Kindheit (House of Childhood) tells the story of a familyʼs losing their home in Austria and of their inability to find their way into a new society. Emigration, ... alienation and the associated emotions and changes including the search for identity is one of the phenomena of contemporary literature. Mitgutsch describes the impact of war, dislocation and presents a range of negative emotions resulting from emigration and strangeness. The writer processes emotions such as love, despair, grief and longing. Haus der Kindheit, further, presents two different cultures and the intertwined history of Austria and the United States. In addition, the novel portrays the failed approach to a society that does not deal with its own past. Mitgutschʼs novel is an oppressive society novel set partly in the Austrian province, but also a family saga, which connects, in a literary manner, historical elements and emotional moments.
