  • A unified approach to English degemination = Poenoten pristop k izgubi geminiranih soglasnikov v angleščini : diplomsko delo
    Božič, Jurij, 1988-
This thesis aims to present a unified account of geminate consonants and theirdegemination within one morpheme (true geminates) and those found at morpheme boundaries (fake geminates) in Old, Middle ... and Modern English within the framework of Optimality Theory (Prince & Smolensky 1993/2004). It also discusses the implications of the data for the representation of true geminateconsonants. Late Old English is revealed to possess a synchronic process of word-final degemination of true geminates, which stretches into early Middle English. Late Middle English, on the other hand, reveals completedegemination of true geminates (from a diachronic standpoint) and a process of synchronic word-final degemination of fake geminates, which is realised by vowel-epenthesis. The late Middle English state of affairs is identical to the status of geminates in Modern English: Modern English prohibits true geminates in all positions, fake geminates in word-final position, but intervocalic fake geminates still surface. The synchronic process of word-final degemination that arises in late Old English and is continued in early Middle English rejects the Moraic Hypothesis of geminate-representation (Hyman 1985; Hayes 1989; Morʹen 1999/2001; Ham 2001; Topintzi 2008), which claims that geminates should be represented primarily through the underlying moraicity (weight) of consonantal segments. Since the restrictions on the foot-structure in Middle English reveal that the moraic structure of the lexical items that undergo word-final degemination is not changed at all, this speaks in favour of the Timing Hypotesis of geminate-representation (McCarthy 1979, 1986; Leben 1980; Clements & Keyser 1983; Levin 1985; Hayes 1986; Selkirk 1990; Hume et al. 1997), which claims that true geminates are single consonantal segments dominated by two timing units, viz. two x-nodes.
