  • Current situation on a use of ionization smoke detectors in Slovenia [Elektronski vir]
    Tavčar, Polona, 1975- ...
Ionization smoke detectors are used world wide. The Slovenian Nuclear Safety Administration (SNSA) carried out a study about the use of these detectors in Slovenia. The study included users, ... maintenance and servicing companies, authorised radiation protection experts, as well as current Slovenian legislation overview. In Slovenia the use of ionization smoke detectors does not require any licence. However, a user must assure the control of ionisation smoke detectors in regular 5-year intervals. Their maintenance ("servicing") is a radiation practice which is subject of licensing. In order to perform the study, the SNSA dispatched a circular letter in 2006, requesting registered and unregistered users of ionization smoke detectors to participate in the study. The results of the study are presented in the paper as well as proposals for further actions. The analysis of responses indicate that due to insufficient control in the past and ignorance of many users and others involved in managing the ionization smoke detectors, the register of ionization smoke detectors is incomplete. At the moment, there are around 26,200 smoke detectors registered properly. In the past few years the SNSA also dealt with four cases of violation of legislation, regarding the use of ionization smoke detectors. The study showed that improper management of smoke detectors could be a serious health and safety issue. For this reason further action is needed in this regard.
