Epistemic modality in English and Slovene [Elektronski vir] = Epistemična naklonskost v angleščini in slovenščini : diplomsko deloJenič, PetraThis paper deals with the concept of epistemic modality in English and Slovene, and focuses on different ways of expressing it. Many authors have explored modality in English, whereas the number of ... discussions regarding this subject in Slovene is considerably lower. Apart from modal auxiliary verbs, which are the most frequently discussed expression type, the study explores six other types of epistemic modal markers. The paper tries to find out what the most frequent epistemic expression type is in the two languages and whether the modality of the original is preserved in translation. In order to answer these questions, the present analysis is based on the comparison of epistemic expressions used in the novel Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro and their translation correspondences in the Slovene version of the book. The results show that the most frequent way of expressing epistemic modality in English is by modal adverbs and the most common epistemic expression type in Slovene is modal particles. In the majority of cases, epistemic modality was preserved in translation.Type of material - undergraduate thesis ; adult, seriousPublication and manufacture - Ljubljana : [P.
