  • Diving into the reading skill and improving it with pre-reading, while-reading and post-reading activities [Elektronski vir] : diplomsko delo
    Kozelj, Urša
Reading is the most used language skill, since we use it on every step we take. Therefore, it is important to teach it in the English classroom and improve the students' reading skills by using the ... three types of activities: pre-reading, while-reading and post-reading activities. The aim of this thesis was to explore what reading actually is, how to improve the students' reading skills, to evaluate the pre-reading, while-reading and post-reading activities in coursebooks and in other activity resource books for teachers, and to prove that there is an important role of these activities and that the appropriate usage of them in the classroom is of great importance as well. This thesis first focuses on what reading is, what being a reader means and what the purposes for reading are. Then it moves on to show how to teach the skill of reading, of what phases it consists and how to select the most appropriate text for a certain class. It then presents the three types of reading activities: pre-reading, while-reading and post-reading activities, different types of reading strategies (skimming, scanning, intensive reading and extensive reading) and how to develop reading skills with the help of graded readers. Next it shows the analysis of the pre-reading, while reading and post-reading activities in the coursebooks and in other activity resource books for teachers. The findings suggest that sometimes the coursebook activities are not sufficiently interesting or diverse or that sometimes a class needs a different approach to achieve certain reading purposes. In such cases, the teachers can revert to different activity resource books. However, very often it is the reading activities in the coursebooks that are the most efficient and the teacher needs to know how to motivate the students. The observation of all of the activities showed that the reading (pre-, while-, and post-) activities are of major importance to help students understand texts and learn new words, grammar and different reading strategies and also to promote love for reading.
