  • Linguistic and sociolinguistic aspects of Jamaican Creole as presented in the poetry of Louise Bennett Coverley [Elektronski vir] = Lingvistični in sociolingvistični vidiki jamajške kreolščine v poeziji Louise Bennett Coverley : diplomsko delo
    Mirnik, Jerneja
My diploma thesis is focused on the linguistic and sociolinguistic features of Jamaican Creole, which has often been (mis)represented as merely a substandard dialect of the lower classes in Jamaica. ... However, the language situation in Jamaica proves that Jamaican Creole is in fact a language of its own, with all the typical grammatical features that a real language has to encompass. The status of Jamaican Creole is gradually being incorporated in the written form as well. Many Jamaican authors choose to use Jamaican Creole as their preferred language, in which their works are written. One of these authors was Louise Bennett Coverley who paved the way of using Jamaican Creole as a written language. In my diploma thesis I described Jamaican Creole and searched for linguistic and sociolinguistic features that Jamaican Creole shares with other creoles of the world. My purpose was also to discover some linguistic characteristics which are typically Jamaican and are not common in other creoles. I also presented Jamaican Creole in its literary form by analysing the poetry of the Jamaican author Louise Bennett Coverley.
