  • Adaptations of William Shakespeare's plays and elements of his plays in modern-day cartoons [Elektronski vir] = Priredbe dramskih besedil Williama Shakespearja in njihovih elementov v sodobnih risanih filmih : magistrsko delo
    Švob, Petra
This Master's thesis looks into some popular cartoons of the modern age in order to explore adaptations of canonical works of literature, namely, adaptations of Shakespeare's plays into cartoons. ... Through the theoretical basis from the field of adaptation and archetypal criticism, the thesis identifies processes and patterns in adaptation, and storytelling in general. Theories by Linda Hutcheon, Vladimir Propp, Northrop Frye and Christopher Booker are then applied to a sample corpus of cartoons where the individual elements and methods of adapting a canonical literary work into cartoons are analysed. The specific cartoons I look at are: The Lion King, Gnomeo and Juliet, The Lion King II: Simba's Pride, Mulan, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, Toy Story III, The Hunchback of Notre Dame. The purpose of the analysis is to identify the parallel parts of adaptations, the elements borrowed from the plays as well as the differences between them and to determine the purpose of those methods and processes. The analysis aims to display that the main purpose of those processes and methods is not primarily to educate but mainly to entertain, serving to popularize cartoons by making them more appealing to a broader audience including adults.
