How literature is translated between minor languagesZlatnar Moe, Marija ; Strsoglavec, Đurđa ; Žigon, Tanja, 1974-In the globalized world with English as its central language, it may seem that translating from minor languages is on its way out. In reality, however, it becomes ever more important not only in the ... frame of international political and economic cooperation, but also in the frame of intercultural mediation of art and literature. This paper deals with particularities of translating literature from one minor language to another on two levels. On the micro-level, we studied several Slovene translations from other minor languages to see whether translators/publishers from minor cultures treat their minor-culture source texts differently than translators/publishers from major languages and cultures. On the macro-level, we looked into the translation policies in different source countries/regions and in the Slovene target culture. We sought to determine who decides what is going to be translated, how they decide, and what is the role of the source countries, individual translators, editors and central mediators in the translation process. We found that both the source countries and individual translators play a more active role than is the case with more central languages and cultures. We have, however, found that those central languages and cultures also influence translations between minor languages, either because the editors and publishers find individual texts based on their central translations and popularity in the biggest markets, or because translators use translation tools in those languages due to the lack of high-quality bilingual translation tools for minor languages.Source: mTm - A Translation Journal. - ISSN 1791-8421 (Vol. 9, 2017, str. 168-191)Type of material - article, component part ; adult, seriousPublish date - 2017Language - englishCOBISS.SI-ID - 67966818
