A game of thrones : proper nouns and their translations into French and Slovene = Igra prestolov : prevodi lastnih imen v slovenščino in francoščino = Le trône de fer : la traduction des noms propres en slovène et en français : magistrsko deloPleško, PetraThe popularity of fantasy fiction has increased enormously in the last few decades. One of the major works of this genre is George R. R. Martin's fantasy fiction series A Song of Ice and Fire. This ... thesis focuses on the first novel of the series, A Game of Thrones, and explores the French and Slovene translations of the proper nouns used in the novel. In the first part of the thesis, a theoretical backgound is established. This section discusses the main aspects of translation relevant for this topic; it describes the main translation techniques, it presents some criteria for evaluating the quality of a translation, and it offers some methods for dealing with the translation of problematic items, among which are also proper nouns. In the second part of the thesis, the proper nouns and their translations from the novel are analysed by groups: character names, surnames, nicknames and titles (e.g. Ser Loon --> ser Butor / ser Budalo); object names, such as castles and swords (e.g. Riverrun --> Vivesaigues / Rečnjava); and geographical names of regions, rivers, cities, (e.g. King's Landing --> Port-Réal / Kraljevi pristanek), etc. The procedures of naming in fantasy fiction are briefly discussed first, to aid the study of their meanings and components later on. Secondly, the analysis explores various techniques used in the translation of proper nouns in A Game of Thrones to find out which technique is used the most often and which one is the most fitting for each group of proper nouns in fantasy fiction. The analysis also focuses on the less straightforward examples of translations and finds the meanings behind each item - original and translated - to try to find parallels between them. This thesis helps establish the most common and the most adequate techniques for the translation of proper nouns in fantasy fiction on the example of two translations of one of the most popular novels of the genre, A Game of Thrones.Type of material - master's thesis ; adult, seriousPublication and manufacture - Ljubljana : [P.
