Structuring pollycrystaline Fe-Si steel surfaces by means of ion beam-ripples, facets and other morphologiesŠetina, Barbara ; Jenko, Monika, metalurginjaFabricating nanoscale features of controlled structure is of large interest for the high-through put mass production of nanoscale devices. Among these methods self-organised pattern formation has ... recently attracted much attention. Particular interest has been oriented towards the synthesis of self-organised periodic patterns induced by ion beam irradiation. Ion beam sputtering with a defocused ion beam provides a very useful tool for inducing the growth of periodic surface modulations: depending on sputtering conditions, different morphologies such as ripples, pits, mounds, pyramidal structures or dots form by self-organization processes. Electrical steel surfaces of different compositions were subjected to Ar[sup]+ ion beam irradiation of different energies and doses. The resulting morphologies are grain-orientation dependent, ranging from well-defined ripple structures to teraces, pits, or pyramidal structures. The characteristic length of these structures is in the order of a few hundred nanometers, as was seen by atomic force microscopy (AFM) as well as scanning electron microscopy (SEM). By adding a small amount of surface active element Se, we were able to observe a different type of pattern formation: namely faceting in grains with certain orientation. In this contribution, we will explore the role of ion beam parameters (such as energy, dose, angle of incidence) on the formation of periodic self-organised nanostructures. By Electron Backascattered Difraction (EBSD) method we will also determine the role of grain orientation on the resulting nanostructure. Auger electron spectroscopy will be used for the determination of surface active element concentration and its role on the pattern formation.Source: Book of abstract (Str. 130)Type of material - conference contributionPublish date - 2009Language - englishCOBISS.SI-ID - 764586
