  • The basis for presurgical orhopaedic treatment of infants with unilateral complete cleft lip and palate
    Koželj, Vesna
We established that preoperative treatment with a passive plate and strapping efficiently corrected the deformity of the nasal septum. This is necessary to ensure unobstructed nasal breathing after ... surgical procedures, essential for maintenance of the proper posture of the oral cavity necessary for normal facial development. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the late results of the preoperative treatment. The study includes 21 children with unilateral complete cleft lip and palate (UCLP) who had six months of preoperative treatment with a passive plate and strapping. The present ages of the patientsrange from four to nine years. We evaluated the achieved growth on dental casts by comparing the parameters of each child with the mean values ofnormal contemporaries. Subjectively, we judged the posture of the oral cavity, position of the centre line, and dental occlusion. We ascertained thatof them had a width, depth and length of the alveolar arch in the range ofout of 21 did not acquire the correct posture of the oral cavity. They became more or less manifest mouth breathers. They all had too small an alveolar arch for their ages. We feel that the result is reason enough to view this kind of preoperative treatment as an essential part of the treatmentof children with UCLP.
