  • Motion of flexible object on pneumatic active surface device

    The current lack of manufacturing techniques for very high volume handling of small objects presents a technology barrier to the commercial success of micro electromechanical systems (MEMS). A ... fundamentally new approach to automated massive parallel manipulation of small-sized parts represents a pneumatic device with active surface (PASD). It offers great flexibility and speed and it can be employed to position, orient, identify, sort, feed, and assemble multiple rigid or flexible objects simultaneously. This paper describes experimental work done on a prototype PASD. Open-loop control techniques for translation in two degrees of freedom and rotation of flexible objects on PASD are considered. Due to disturbances causing deviations of desired motion open-loop translation control with closed-loop rotation control was developed, too.
