  • Influence of small defects made up by Vickers indentations on the fatigue strenght of steel
    Gliha, Vladimir ; Vuherer, Tomaž
The influence of small artificial surface defects at the weld-toe of welds in HSLA steels on the fatigue strength of steel is studied. The samples were prepared on a welding thermal-cycle simulator. ... Small surface defects, whose size does not exceed the primary austenitic grain size are produced by indentatiing with a Vickers pyramid. The steel indented by a hard pyramid resits to the applied load, and the final result of loading removal are compressive residual stresses caused by the relaxation of elastically deformed material. During cyclic loading the fatigue crack initiates at the bottom of indentations. The initiation is a result of the interaction between defect and cyclic stress. However, the residual stresses interfere with the effects of the defect. In order to relieve the residual stresses, the steel with defects was heat-treated. The result - a lower fatigue strength.
