  • Flow patterns in symmetrical three-leg manifolds : experimental and numerical analysis

In hydropower systems, different types of pipe dividing solutions are used. Trifurcations divide one flow into three. In order to reduce the space requirements of a power station the use of ... trifurcation is favorable. If symmetrical pipes have an equal diameter, an even flow rate distribution is expected. During experimental tests it has been observed that the flow distribution into individual pipes, when one pipe is divided into three, was not equal. In this peper we try to explain the measured flow in a dividing pipe. A well developed flow swirl that passes over the middle pipe from the right to the left pipe or in the opposite direction is observed. This process is random, while no periodical repetition exists. When the flow swirl occurs in the branch, the increase of head losses is observed. Numerical modeling gives similar flow conditions as experimental tests (measurements). The comparison of measured and numerical results for steady flow reveals a similar behaviour. The analysis of this phenomenon leads to more knowledge about the function of manyfolds.
