Theoretical Background: In the case of emergency situations, such as cardiac arrest, it is of utmost importance for family members, eyewitnesses or bystanders, mostly lay people, to act quickly, ...confidently and rationally. The purpose of the thesis is to present the knowledge of lay people in the region of Koroška in the field of basic life support procedures and the use of automatic defibrillator (AED). Method: The research was based on a quantitative method, the primary sources were obtained through the survey and practical testing of the use of an AED on a dummy. Secondary sources were collected through the review of professional and scientific articles by Slovene and foreign authors. To find resources, the following databases were used: Cobbis and Proquest. Results: Half of the surveyed lay people in the region of Koroška know where an AED is located in their place of residence. The automatic external defibrillator was correctly used by 53.3% of the survey participants, half of the surveyed lay people in the Koroška region know the correct sequencing of CPR. Results revealed a higher level of knowledge and skills among participants than first expected. Discussion: Despite the fact that the results of the survey showed a good knowledge and skills among participants, it is necessary to continue in educating lay people in the field of performing basic life support and using an AED, as well as to attract more people to participate.
