  • Aesthetic judgements of furniture colour and style
    Kovačev, Asja Nina
The aim of the present study was to determine the most popular furniture style and colours in Slovenia. The subjects had to choose between antique, rustic, extravagant and some other styles of ... furniture. They also had to decide which of the presented qualities of the chosen style determined their decision. The main qualities of different styles were presented on the following dimensions: warmth, dynamics, excitation, richness, harmony, etc. Some of them were typical only for one style, while some of them were typical for more styles. After that the subjects had to choose the appropriate, i.e. the most beautiful colours for seven places. Colour choices were very important for aesthetic judgements because colours gave the places (and particularly the furniture) special emotional significance and provided the subjects with experimental fullness. The subjects' colour preferences were interpreted in accordance with colour symbolism in European culture. Still, the meanings of colours were not easy to determine, for colours have a lot of contraindictory meanings in every culture. The determination of some common, universal connotations was enabled by the knowledge of their similar psychophysical effects on human beings.
