In today's complex manufacturing environment it is hard to imagine managing manufacturing enterprises without control and information systems. IT solutions for manufacturing (MES) are becoming an ... important tool for managing production processes and improving efficiency. To generate expected results, those systems need to be well integrated with process control systems and other automation solutions - to provide appropriate process data in real time. Even though the manufacturing IT systems have been around for years, this topic is still subject of discussion and different opinions, from both the solution providers and the users. The main uncertainties are related to defining the subject and corresponding functionalities, technological aspects and implementation principles. Current global trends support configurable tools and competent solution providers (systems integrators) with domain expertise. It is expected that also Slovenian market is going to follow these trends in the near future. Most of the people working in the field of IT solutions for manufacturing (MES) in Slovenia are somehow related to process control and automation. As a consequence, the influence of automation business and related professionals for the future development of IT solutions for manufacturing is high - including some responsibilities for the deviation from the direction of global trends. We believe that the main reason for that is a lack of knowledge about manufacturing management, corresponding IT solutions and implementation techniques among the engineers from both the end user companies and the solution providers. It is not surprising, since the educational system especially technical universities who generate most of the automation professionals - still has not recognised these subjects as relevant to become part of the study programs.
