  • Synthesis of ultra-hard, superabrasive ▫$AlMgB_14$▫ and ▫$AlMgB_14-TiB_2$▫ composites from Al-Mg-B ternary system

    As an alternative to mechanical alloying, high temperature synthesis - HTS - of ultra-hard, superabrasive ▫$AlMgB_14$▫ from elements was performed under normal pressure. The reaction mixture ... consisted of elemental aluminium and boron, whereas magnesium was added in the form of a Mg-precursor which liberates elemental magnesium app. 400 °C above the melting point of magnesium, in this way reducing its evaporation during heating-up. An 80 vol %conversion to ▫$AlMgB_14$▫ and 20 vol % to▫$MgAl_2O_4$▫ was achieved. Future project milestones necessary for achieving higher ▫$AlMgB_14$▫ reaction yield and reducing the ▫$MgAl_2O_4$▫ content, as well as producing sinter-active ▫$AlMgB_14$▫ powder are also presented.
