From 1998-1999 during different seasons in the period of low flows the impact of water abstraction on community of periphytic algae and hydrological characteristics in the river Sava Dolinka, in the ...area of water abstraction for the power plant Moste and in the Soča river in the area of water abstraction for the power plants Doblar and Ajba, was estimated. The role of periphytic algae in the determination of ecologically acceptable flow (EAF) inrunning waters was defined. The results showed quantitative and qualitative hydrological, biological and physical-chemical changes below the dams. The results of hydrological analysis showed an essentially changed hydrological regime and a predomination of gravel deposits with a large part of coarse grains below the dams. Due to water abstraction, the physical and chemical water structure below the dams are not regulated by the conditions in the upper part of the river basin anymore, but by the tributaries downstream the area of the water abstraction. The constant flow and infrequent appearance of high water flows below the dams caused a high diversity of periphytic algae and differences in the periphytic algae biomass, compared with related sampling points upstream the dams. In the determination of EAF the knowledge of periphytic algae community is necessary; they perform the initial steps of the food chain, respond quickly to environmental changes and offer a basis andrefuge to many water organisms. The value of EAF has to assure the quantityand quality of water, to prevent essential changes in the structure and function of periphytic algae community.
