In this article a comparison is being made between the Dutch novel Het schnitzelparadijs (Schnitzel Paradise) by Khalid Boudou and the Slovene novel Čefurji raus!(Čefurji get out!) by Goran Vojnović. ...Both authors are almost the same age with foreign background writing in a language which is not their mother tongue. Some parallels in the plots and themes which have to do with growing up and the life of the immigrants are touched upon. A reader meets the Other through the eyes of this same Other, about whom many stereotypes exist. The search of the main characters is the search for their identity. Both novels could be classified as Bildungsromans "to a certain extent" and are strongly characterized by an original, inventive language and their humorous, ironic and even hilarious style. It is the language and the humour, the latter directly related to the former, which make for the innovation in both of the novels. Most of the characters find themselves between the two cultures and this hybridity is also expressed in the language.The stereotypes are broken down by the same elements which characterize them mostly and to that end the language is the most efficient instrument which is especially noticeable in Vojnović's novel.
