  • Primerjava pogostosti rabe idiomov v slovenskem časopisu Delo in britanskem The independent : diplomska naloga
    Ferlič, Petra, 1984-
The paper compares the frequency of the use of idioms in the Slovene newspaper Delo and the British newspaper The Independent from 27th July 2012. The meaning of idioms is not derivable from the ... meaning of their constituents. Due to their complexity, they are of great interest to translators. Idioms can be modified in order for the writer to achieve a special effect of exuberance or humour in the text. Changes to the normative image of a particular idiom are not always considered a violation. If the meaning and the form of the basic idiom remain recognisable while the text introduces a new semantic dimension and creates tension, they are considered just a stylistic feature of an idiom. This paper presents information on the actual use of idioms in two newspapers. The idioms are analysed formally and translated. Since Slovene and English have very different roots it is difficult to find similar or even identical idioms. While translating idioms we strive to maintain idiomaticity and yet it is often necessary to step back from this criterion and use a descriptive translation equivalent.
