This master's thesis addresses popular science discourse with a particular focus on popular science articles. It presents some specific challenges that translators face while translating. Special ...attention is given to descriptive translation studies and the concept of translation norms, which was introduced by Gideon Toury and expanded on by Andrew Chesterman. Examples for the analysis are taken from the October 2013 issue of the magazine National Geographic. English articles are compared with their translations in the German and Slovene editions. The empirical part is based on the hypothesis that - due to different target cultures and languages - the German and Slovene translations differ significantly with regard to the concept of norms. Moreover, the analysis focuses on which norms are conformed to or broken in the German translations, and which ones in the Slovene translations. An attempt is made to determine possible reasons for translators' behavior and choice of translation strategy. The empirical part presents two methodological approaches: an interview with the editor in chief of the Slovene edition of the magazine and translation analysis of culture-specific elements, headlines, and specific text passages of one article. The detailed analysis shows that the German and Slovene translators tend to conform to different norms, which is the result of different cultures and languages. These results confirm the hypothesis.
