    The English language is extremely productive in the formation of noun + noun combinations. Since nouns can often occupy the attributive position, which is traditionally deemed to be the role of the ... adjective, I am interested in which factors affect the choice between the noun and the adjective in attributive position in a particular noun phrase. On the basis of fourteen sets of premodifier pairs (nouns and their derived adjectival forms), I have conducted a corpus research to create an exhaustive list of the most common headwords premodified by chosen nouns and adjectives. All examples are taken from the medical field. Etymology and semantics are taken into account when attempting to justify the choice of premodifier word class in the chosen examples.
