  • Contrastive analysis of until and dokler and the problem of transfer in second language acquisition = Kontrastivna analiza časovnih odvisnikov dokler in until in problem transfera pri učenju drugega jezika : magistrsko delo
    Agić, Tina
This thesis addresses the question of transfer in the acquisition of L2 English by L1 Slovene learners. I work from the premise that L2 learners tend to transfer the structures from their L1 to the ... L2 when these structures are different from or non-existent in the L2. The differences between the L1 and L2 are determined by means of contrastive analysis. Although it has been argued in the past that contrastive analysis cannot predict and account for learners' errors, I still find it the most valuable tool in doing so. The problem which I have chosen to analyse in this thesis is the use of conjunctions until and dokler in adverbial clauses of time. Since dokler has two meanings in English, I assumed that one of the uses will be problematic for Slovene learners, and that the problem will be encoding. That is, when dokler has the meaning of until, it is used with the negative particle ne - a construction, which is non-existent in English, expletive negation. In this particular construction, clauses introduced by dokler ... ne occur with perfective verbs only. Until can be used in negative contexts as well; however, it can take both perfective and imperfective verbs, which is a source of ambiguity in itself. In the theoretical part, I extensively explored transfer and contrastive analysis, and applied the findings in the empirical part, in which I first conducted a contrastive analysis of the two conjunctions and identified possible sources of error which would trigger transfer. Based on my CA findings, I designed a test for 1st and 3rd year high school students (secondary and vocational schools) and 1st year faculty students of English. The students had to translate sentences which included adverbial clauses of time introduced by until and dokler. The analysis of the test showed that transfer is present and that students do transfer from the L1 to the L2. However, transfer occurred in some of the examples in which it was not predicted by the CA, whereas the frequency of occurrence of errors was very low in the examples in which transfer was predicted.
