Learning to play poker from expert knowledge and playing experience

In this paper we present a poker agent that is capable of learning a betting strategy based on expert knowledge and its own playing experience. The learning algorithm combines initial probabilities ...for each possible action for every possible card combination received through expert knowledge and a heuristic method to update the probabilities after each hand. The algorithm increases or decreases the probabilities for the action taken based on the outcome of the hand. Using this technique gives the agent the ability to adapt to different playing styles of his opponents, constantly learning how to play and improve its performance. After learning from hundred thousand hands the agent showed significant improvements in his play. Despite the increase of the agent's performance, he was still losing against his opponent due to the lack of other necessary characteristics needed for successful play.
