  • Time-dependent characteristics of polymer-metal composites for the use in injection moulding technology : dissertation
    Gonzalez-Gutierrez, Joamin
Powder injection moulding (PIM) is a versatile technique for manufacturing metal or ceramic parts with complex geometry. PIM consists of four major steps. Debinding is the most time consuming step ... and as an effort to reduce debinding time, polyoxymethylene (POM) binders have been introduced into the feedstock material. The main problem with POM-based feedstock materials is their high viscosity that can bring complications during the injection moulding of small parts with complex geometry. This dissertation investigates two strategies for lowering the viscosity of POM-based feedstock materials. The first strategy is the selection of the right molecular weight distribution for the polymeric binder, while the second one is to select the proper particle size distribution of the filler powder. Using these two strategies a new feedstock material was prepared with a 7-time viscosity reduction and an increase of powder content of around 2 wt%, compared to commercially available POM-based feedstock material.
